A 4-week course for anyone ready to slow down, get muddy, and dive into the rhythm of the wheel. No experience needed — just curiosity, patience, and a willingness to let go of perfection.
Over four weekly sessions, you’ll learn the foundations of wheelthrowing: centering, shaping, trimming, glazing, and more. Each participant works at their own pace, with full guidance and their own wheel for the duration of the course.
Session 1 – Getting to Know the Wheel (2 hrs)
We’ll start with the basics: wedging, centering, and forming your first pieces from a ball of clay. You’ll begin to understand how the clay moves and how to work with it. This session focuses on throwing cylinders — the foundation for almost every vessel.
Session 2 – Building Confidence on the Wheel (2 hrs)
You’ll continue practicing your throwing technique, refining your form, and experimenting with new shapes. This is your chance to explore and gain more control over the clay while deepening your understanding of the wheel.
Session 3 – Trimming, Carving & Handling (2 hrs)
Your pieces are now leather-hard — the perfect stage for trimming. We’ll refine and shape the bottoms of your thrown pieces, learn to trim and carve for detail and texture, and practice making and attaching handles. If there’s time, you’ll also have the chance to hop back on the wheel to throw a bit more.
Session 4 – Glazing & Final Touches (2 hrs)
Your earlier pieces have now been bisque fired and are ready for glazing. You’ll begin by choosing your glazes and learning different application techniques, then glaze your bisqued pieces. You’ll also trim any pieces thrown during the previous session and choose the glazes you’d like for those — we’ll take care of glazing them for you.
We’ll end with a moment to share, reflect, and admire everyone’s creations. About three weeks later, your finished pieces will be ready for pickup!
