A 4-week wheelthrowing course for anyone ready to slow down, get muddy, and deepen their connection to clay.
Whether you’re a first timer or you already have some experience and want more personalized guidance, this course meets you exactly where you are. It’s designed for beginner–intermediate levels, with plenty of room for those who want to strengthen technique, refine form, or work more intentionally.
Over four weekly sessions, you’ll build (or reinforce) the foundations of wheelthrowing: centering, shaping, trimming, glazing, and more. Each participant works at their own pace, with full support and their own wheel for the entire course.
Session 1 – Getting to Know the Wheel (2 hrs)
A welcoming introduction for beginners and a great technical reset for returning throwers.
We’ll start with the basics: wedging, centering, and forming your first pieces. You’ll learn how the clay moves and begin throwing cylinders — the starting point for nearly every vessel.
Session 2 – Building Skill & Confidence (2 hrs)
We’ll continue developing your throwing technique, refining form, and experimenting with new shapes.
Participants with experience will receive individualized guidance to deepen control, push consistency, and explore more intentional design choices.
Session 3 – Trimming, Carving & Handling (2 hrs)
Your pieces will be leather-hard and ready for trimming.
We’ll refine bottoms, carve for detail and texture, and practice making and attaching handles.
More experienced throwers can work on advanced trimming techniques or hop back on the wheel to throw additional pieces.
Session 4 – Glazing & Final Touches (2 hrs)
Your early pieces will be bisque-fired and ready to glaze.
We’ll explore glaze choices, learn different application methods, and glaze your bisqued work.
You’ll also trim pieces thrown the week before and choose glazes for those — we’ll glaze them for you after the course.
We’ll end with a moment to share, reflect, and admire everyone’s creations.
Finished pieces will be ready for pickup 4–6 weeks later, depending on firing schedules.
