This 4-session course is the perfect introduction to throwing on the potter's wheel.
Session 1: Throwing
Learning how to "wedge" 400g balls of clay in preparation for the wheel. We will learn how to throw 3-5 mugs, experimenting with different styles and shapes.
Session 2: Trimming
Now that our mugs are leather-hard we will learn how to trim the bottoms and add a foot. We will learn different carving techniques such as "sgraffito" and we will learn how to make and attach handles. After session 2 your pieces will go into the kiln (ceramic oven) and become bisque-ware.
Session 3: Glazing
You will learn the basics of glazing and painting including different techniques such as dipping, layering, wax resist. You will also have the opportunity to paint details on your work with underglaze and how to apply transparent glaze on top.
Session 4: Final Look
In the final session you will learn how to sand the bottom of your finished pieces including correcting any glaze malfunctions. You will have the opportunity to reflect and share about your process as well as go over any questions.
